UK Government: Richard Caborn announces increases in gaming machine prizes

Casino jackpot machines to have GBP2,000 prize limit, Amusement machines GBP25.

Minister for Sport Richard Caborn today announced increases in the maximum prizes for two kinds of gaming machine - all cash amusements with prizes machines and machines in licensed casinos.

But he warned the industry that it needs to remain effective in controlling the use of machines by children. He also stressed the importance of maintaining the reputation for integrity which the British gambling industry has earned.

Speaking at the annual conference of the British Amusements Catering Trades Association, Richard Caborn said: " The Secretary of State and I have decided that, in line with the recommendations of the Gaming Board and the Gambling Review, we should make two changes to the present legal limits. These will increase the maximum prize from an all-cash Amusements with Prizes gaming machine from GBP15 to GBP25 and the maximum prize from a jackpot gaming machine in a casino from GBP1000 to GBP2000.

" The gambling industry must continue to play an active part in ensuring that the controls against gambling on these machines by children are effective. How we take forward the proposals of the Gambling Review will be influenced by how effectively the industry ensures that our current voluntary rules work.

"We are serious about protecting children. These prize increases will give the industry more flexibility and freedom, but with that freedom goes responsibility. The government's part in that will be to make sure that any future legislative changes strike the right balance for the industry, the vulnerable, and the country."
